Hawaiian treefern harvesting affects forest regeneration and plant succession

, : Hawaiian treefern harvesting affects forest regeneration and plant succession. Research Note, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, USDA Forest Service (PSW-355): 8

Transects were established in 1972 in a 150-acre area of treefern (Cibotium) forest, predominantly C. glaucum. The treefern stems are highly prized for growing orchids. About 25 acres were left undisturbed. Controlled harvesting took place on 100 acres (20-30% overstorey treeferns removed) and uncontrolled harvesting (50-60% overstorey removed) on the remaining 25 acres. Woody plants over 4.5 ft in ht. and treeferns over 2 ft were tallied in 1972, 1977 and 1980.
