Cytoembryological studies of wheat and distant hybrids involving wheat revealed two phases of cell differentiation: (1) early differentiation brought about during mitotic cycles (autosynthetic interphase) by means of differentiating divisions of types I and II and reproductive divisions, and (2) final differentiation brought about by a cell which has emerged from the mitotic cycles into G1 or G2 (i.e. in heterosynthetic interphase).
