In a 7-year programme aiming at the establishment of inbred lines which would serve as parental material for disease-resistant F1 hybrid varieties, 15 introduced hybrid varieties were used as the initial material. Among them were sources of resistance to tobacco mosaic, nematodes, races A, B and C of Cladosporium fulvum races 1 and 2 of Fusarium oxysporum and Verticillium albo-atrum.
