Comparison of starvation and infection by Schistosoma mansoni on tissue viability and the 31 P NMR spectrum of Biomphalaria glabrata

, : Comparison of starvation and infection by Schistosoma mansoni on tissue viability and the 31 P NMR spectrum of Biomphalaria glabrata. Zeitschrift fur Parasitenkunde 72(3): 417-421

Investigations showed that the effects of parasitization with S. mansoni and starvation on the 31P NMR spectrum of the B. glabrata digestive gland-gonad tissue complex cannot be compared directly. Although differences in ATP/ADP ratio or in the relative decrease in phosphonate may represent quantitative differences in metabolic stress between the 2 states, the marked decrease in the phosphodiester metabolites observed in infected tissue was totally absent from the tissue of starved snails. Starved snails were able to compensate metabolically and maintain a normal blood glucose level, but infected snails were not.
