Effect of dietary calcium on selenium retention in postweaning swine

, : Effect of dietary calcium on selenium retention in postweaning swine. Journal of Animal Science 60(6): 1429-1437

Diets based on maize and soyabean oilmeal with 20% protein, selenium 0.3 or 5.0 mg/kg as sodium selenite and calcium 0.5, 0.8, 1.1 or 1.4% as dicalcium phosphate or limestone, were given to 135 weanling pigs for 28 days. Dietary Ca had no effect on gain or feed measurements but Se 5.0 mg/kg decreased gain slightly. In pigs given Se 5.0 mg/kg, concentrations of Se in liver, kidney, heart and longissimus muscle were higher than in pigs given Se 0.3 mg/kg.
