The stock of cattle in France decreased by 1.3% during 1985, while the nubmer of farm units rearing cattle declined by 4.8%. The number of dairy cows fell by 2.8% during this period, but a 3.5% rise was noted in the number of nurse cows. The number of farm units rearing pigs declined from about 200 000 in December 1984 to about 170 000 in December 1985. It is mainly farms with less than 10 pigs in 1984 that moved out of pig farming in 1985.
