Concepts of orchard lay-out adapted to each apple variety

, : Concepts of orchard lay-out adapted to each apple variety. Revue Suisse de Viticulture, d' Arboriculture et d' Horticulture 18(6): 337-340

The interim results are presented of a long-term trial (begun in 1974) with several cultivars, 2 training forms (palmette and spindle), 2 rootstocks (M.26 and M.9) and 3 planting distances. For the best regular yields/unit area, M.9 proved better than M.26. Vigorous cultivars (Marigold, Gravenstein and Boscoop on M.9 should be trained as palmettes and less-vigorous cultivars (Idared, Jonathan, Golden Delicious, Smoothee and Canada) as spindles.
