Effects of some physical and chemical pretreatments on the composition, enzymatic hydrolysis and digestibility of lignocellulosic sugar cane residue

, : Effects of some physical and chemical pretreatments on the composition, enzymatic hydrolysis and digestibility of lignocellulosic sugar cane residue. Process Biochemistry 22(1): 17-23

Sugar-cane chips previously fermented with yeast by the EXFERM process were pretreated with the following: sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate with calcium hydroxide, gaseous ammonia, sulphur dioxide, steam explosion, alkaline organosolv, aq. phenol, and a full soda cook. With one organosolv sample and aq. phenol > 87% delignification was obtained. With aq. phenol and steam explosion almost all hemicelluloses were hydrolysed.
