Identification of a host-specific toxin produced by the corky root rot bacterial pathogen of lettuce

, : Identification of a host-specific toxin produced by the corky root rot bacterial pathogen of lettuce. Phytopathology 76(8): 844

This bacterium produced a cultural toxin which elicited symptoms including chlorosis, root discoloration and growth inhibition. Purification revealed that the toxin is heat stable, has a molecular weight of <340 and is soluble in polar solvents. In a 5-week assay, high concentrations of the toxin stimulated the growth of resistant cultivars but inhibited that of susceptible cultivars; low concentrations stimulated the growth of both.
