Morphological structure of orchids of the genus Pleione D. Don

, : Morphological structure of orchids of the genus Pleione D. Don. Byulleten' Glavnogo Botanicheskogo Sada (142): 62-69

Growth habit, shoot structural system and leaf series formation were studied in 16 Pleione spp. and compared with the closely related Coelogyne spp. The most marked difference between the two genera was the presence of a perennial multiple rhizome in Coelogyne but not in Pleione. In Pleione only 2 shoots (maternal and daughter) are connected functionally and their shoot system is therefore short-lived and the pseudobulbs are annual.
