Seasonal changes in the population structure of the agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, according to its virulent properties

, : Seasonal changes in the population structure of the agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, according to its virulent properties. Meditsinskaya Parazitologiya i Parazitarnye Bolezni (4): 32-38

492 isolates of Leishmania major were obtained during 5 epidemiological seasons (1980-1984) from gerbils in the Karshinskaya Steppe (USSR); 159 clones were raised and both isolates and clones were assessed for virulence and particularly for seasonal and local variations in virulence, with the aim of understanding why human infection occurs almost exclusively in July to Sept., i.e. only in the 2nd half of the transmission season. The following results were obtained.
