The vegetation of the Balsam Mountains of southwest Virginia: a phytosociological study

, : The vegetation of the Balsam Mountains of southwest Virginia: a phytosociological study. Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 111(3): 287-300

Vegetation was surveyed in 65 forest stands at alt. between 1125 and 1547 m and data examined using detrended correspondence analysis. Nine community types were identified: spruce; spruce/fir; northern broadleaves (beech/maple and dwarf beech subtypes); yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) (ravine and boulder field subtypes); mesophytic; mesophytic oak; and northern red oak.
