Adaptive nature of the duration and dynamics of open flowering of the ear in winter hexaploid triticales

Many years' studies of the nature and duration of open flowering in individual florets and ears, which is controlled genotypically and considerably modified by environmental conditions, indicated that winter hexaploid triticales are similar to winter bread wheats in being facultative self pollinators, but that several aspects of floral biology increase the propensity of triticale to cross pollination.
