Breeding strategies for true potato seed production

, : Breeding strategies for true potato seed production. CIP Circular, International Potato Center 16(4): 1-8

Strategies include the use of inbreeding, diploid parental lines, tetraploid parental lines, hybrid progenies, synthetic populations and open-pollinations. A new method of producing low-cost seed by means of cybrid populations is currently under joint investigation by CIP and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. Cybrids have been produced by the transfer of mitochondria from donor to recipient clones by means of protoplast fusion.
