Diagnosis of parasitic diseases using DNA-to-DNA hybridization

, : Diagnosis of parasitic diseases using DNA-to-DNA hybridization. Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 82(2): 235-236

A simple, sensitive, specific and rapid technique using radiolabelled total Trypanosoma cruzi DNA for detecting T. cruzi in mammalian blood spotted directly onto nylon membranes is described. This technique does not require recombinant DNA technology to generate the DNA probe but only a source of purified total parasite DNA; it may be used to detect parasites in blood, faeces, in other body secretions and tissues, and in vectors, and may be particularly useful for diseases with unsatisfactory existing diagnoses, such as giardiasis, trichomoniasis, toxoplasmosis, pneumocystosis and amoebiasis.
