Effect of low temperature on the photosynthetic metabolism of the C4 grass Echinochloa crus-galli

, : Effect of low temperature on the photosynthetic metabolism of the C4 grass Echinochloa crus-galli. Oecologia 69(4): 499-506

A comparison of E. crus-galli populations from 2 contrasting thermal environments (Quebec and Mississippi) showed that after chilling (14 h at 7 degrees C) both maintained a pattern of CO2 fixation typical of C4 plants, but chilling reduced C uptake and C4 enzyme activities. CO2 enrichment (675 micro l/litre) increased the activity of PEP carboxylase and NADP+-malate dehydrogenase while activities of PEP carboxylase and NADP+-malic enzyme were less reduced following chilling.
