Evaluation of three strategic prophylactic programmes against helminthiasis of traditionally managed West African dwarf sheep and goats in Nigeria

, : Evaluation of three strategic prophylactic programmes against helminthiasis of traditionally managed West African dwarf sheep and goats in Nigeria. British Veterinary Journal 144(6): 590-595

Three strategic anthelmintic control programmes for traditionally managed West African Dwarf (WAD) sheep and goats aged 8-20 months were evaluated between April 1984 and March 1985 in Ayangba, Benue State, Nigeria. Four animal groups, A, B, C, and D, each comprising 2 rams, 3 ewes, 2 bucks and 3 nannies/does were used in the study. Animals were dosed with thiabendazole in June and October for group A, May, August, and October for group B, May, July, September, and November for group C, while those in group D were left untreated. The rainy season helminth burden was significantly reduced for the treatment groups (A, B, and C) as compared with the control group D. Similarly animals in groups A, B, and C significantly gained in body weight by 5.7, 6.5 and 7.2 kg respectively over the control group at the end of the study period. Effective prophylaxis involving minimal labour and low cost is achieved by the strategic twice-a-year prophylactic programme. This is economic, adequate, and advocated for traditionally managed WAD sheep and goats.
