Lincoln canopy apple harvester using a continuous horizontal shaking method

, : Lincoln canopy apple harvester using a continuous horizontal shaking method. Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research 44(4): 267-274

A mechanical harvester was developed for removing Lincoln Canopy apples by shaking the branches horizontally. Two positive-displacement type shaker heads were used to drive six discs with rubber teeth at their edges as a frequency of 10 Hz and a peak to peak amplitude of 26 mm. The design makes possible a continuous advance of the machine of about 0.3 km/h during harvesting. Tests were carried out on six varieties of apple. The best results were achieved with Cox's Orange. Red Delicious and Braeburn, for which the percentage of the first and second highest quality apples were 94, 94 and 96% and the removal 97, 96 and 96% respectively.
