In Ontario, Canada, from December 1988 through February 1989 there were 85 reported cases of meningococcal meningitis compared with 35 in 1987-88 and 41 in 1986-87. Although the increased incidence affected 29 of the 43 health units in Ontario, no such increase was noted anywhere else in the country. Most (79%) of the cases were under 20 years old; 34% were under 5 and 11 patients died. Of the 69 isolates that were grouped 30 were group B, 38 group C and 1 group A.
