Serum indole and skatole in patients with various liver diseases

, : Serum indole and skatole in patients with various liver diseases. Clinica Chimica Acta 176(2): 203-206

Serum indole and skatole were studied in 20 healthy subjects, 55 patients with liver disease without hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and 34 with HE. In healthy subjects mean serum indole was 5 nmol/litre, and skatole was not detected. Mean serum indole values were increased in patients with liver disease, and were significantly higher in patients with HE than in those without HE.
