A simple preparatory method for scanning electron microscopy of the mouthparts of muscoid flies (diptera)

, : A simple preparatory method for scanning electron microscopy of the mouthparts of muscoid flies (diptera). Acta Biologica Hungarica 39(4): 441-447

A method for preparing the mouthparts of muscoid flies for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is described. Carbon tetrachloride is first used to kill the flies (in this case Musca domestica) and open their probosci and labellae, hence allowing a clear view of their fine structure. Specimens were then cleaned with a biological washing-powder to remove the pseudo-membrane that forms over the labella from the mucous fluid released by the dying fly.
