Ancylostoma ceylanicum: ATP production and effect of anthelmintics

, : Ancylostoma ceylanicum: ATP production and effect of anthelmintics. Indian Journal of Experimental Biology 28(6): 578-581

Dicarboxylic acids and amino acids were found to support mitochondrial phosphorylation in Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Maximum ATP production was found in succinate-supported phosphorylation under aerobic conditions, but dropped to only 2% under anaerobic conditions. Some anthelmintics, particularly mebendazole, significantly inhibited ATP production. The rate of oxygen uptake by the mitochondria was sensitive to anthelmintics, but the degree of inhibition varied greatly.
