Bee mites: vectors of honey bee pathogens?

, : Bee mites: vectors of honey bee pathogens?. Proceedings of the International Symposium on Recent Research on Bee Pathology, September 5-7, 1990, Ghent, Belgium: 180-182

A synthetic membrane ('Parafilm') through which Varroa jacobsoni and Acarapis woodi can feed on an artificial diet has been developed (see Bruce et al. (1991) Apidologie 22 (5), 503-507). During the course of these studies it was determined that both mites could take up spiroplasmas (helical, wall-less bacteria of the class Mollicutes) known to be pathogenic to honey bees. In addition, the filamentous virus (F virus) of honey bees was found in A. woodi.
