Characteristics and development of soils at Magilligan Foreland, Northern Ireland, with emphasis on dune and beach sand soils

, : Characteristics and development of soils at Magilligan Foreland, Northern Ireland, with emphasis on dune and beach sand soils. Catena 18(3-4): 367-378

Evidence obtained from 34 soil pits has established the characteristics and development of soils at Magilligan Foreland, Northern Ireland. Soil development sequences for the calcareous dune and beach sand areas are outlined, although age estimates for each stage cannot be established with certainty. Dune soils begin as raw sands and under stable conditions progress to sand-pararendzinas and then to brown calcareous sands. The beach soil sequence is: raw alluvial soils .fwdarw. rendzina-like alluvial soils .fwdarw. brown calcareous alluvial soils .fwdarw. humus podzols .fwdarw. brown calcareous alluvial soils. The podzols have reverted to brown calcareous alluvial soils as a result of agricultural activities during the past 1,200 years. These sequences are more detailed than those previously identified for British coastal sands.
