Clay mineralogy of alluvial soils in different physiographic positions

, : Clay mineralogy of alluvial soils in different physiographic positions. Journal of the Indian Society of Soil Science 39(1): 160-168

Six typical soils developed on Gangetic alluvium and located in different physiographic positions in district Varanasi, (UP [Uttar Pradesh, India]), were investigated for their clay mineralogical composition. Illite is the most dominant clay mineral constituting over 57 per cent in all the soils excepting two soils in which smectite was also found in considerable amount. The clay mineral suite generally contained illite, smectite, chlorite and vermiculite along with several mixed intergrade minerals. Some of the soils also contained a little kaolinite.
