High bed - low ditch system in Pearl River Delta, South China

, : High bed - low ditch system in Pearl River Delta, South China. Indian Journal of Dryland Agricultural Research and Development 4(2): 24-34

A high bed and low ditch (HB-LD) system in the alluvial plain of Pearl River Delta has been adopted by peasants to produce rice, sugarcane, fruits, vegetables, fishes and snails. This system allows the production of upland crops in lowland or swamp areas with high water table by lowering the water table and promoting the growth of roots. The ditch which contains water all year round, can act as a buffer to reduce soil and nutrient loss from the field, and can conserve organic matter.
