Impact of stage of maturity and method of preservation of alfalfa on milk production and fiber utilization by lactating dairy cows

, : Impact of stage of maturity and method of preservation of alfalfa on milk production and fiber utilization by lactating dairy cows. Dissertation Abstracts International B, Sciences and Engineering 51(4): 1565B

Three experiments were conducted to measure the impact of Medicago sativa maturity (early bud or early flower) and method of preservation (silage or hay) on the efficiency of milk production by 96 lactating cows fed 60:40 forage:grain rations. M. sativa maturity had little effect on milk production for cows producing up to 38 kg milk/d. M. sativa preserved as silage, on average, supported greater daily DM intakes (1.4 kg) and milk production (2.4 kg) than when preserved as hay.
