Studies in different regions of Kazakhstan, which has the highest infant morbidity and mortality rates of any of the states of the former USSR, showed marked deficiencies in the diet of pregnant and breast-feeding women and of infants less than 1 year. Intake of meat and meat products was 40 to 60, milk and milk products 50 to 80, eggs 20 to 50 and fish and fish products 5 to 20% of normal intake.
