This review is restricted primarily to some history of the development of methods for evaluation of animals. It deals with linear models, with emphasis on missing subclass problems. Some topics covered are as follows: selection index and its pioneers, including Wright and Lush; analysis of variance, particularly as related to variance estimation and Max.
