A review. The patterns of diversity among alleles and between loci indicate that interactions among class-I genes generate sequence diversity. Nucleotide sequences encoding the antigen-binding domain show little evidence of locus specificity. Studies of a series of class-I mutants have indicated that interlocus gene conversion is important in the exchange of sequences among class-I genes.
