The production and distribution of drone comb and brood in honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies as affected by freedom in comb construction

, : The production and distribution of drone comb and brood in honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies as affected by freedom in comb construction. Bee Science 1(4): 203-211

Package colonies (1.36 kg) were established on: (A) previously drawn combs, or (B) worker foundation, or (C) top bars with a 2.5-cm strip of worker foundation (frameless colonies); each hive had a second full-depth hive body added after 10 weeks. In the lower (brood) box, C produced 2.8 and 4.7 times as much drone comb as B and A, respectively, and 1.5 and 3.1 times as much drone brood. Drone cell construction and brood distribution varied with several factors.
