A seventeenth century painting of the potato

, : A seventeenth century painting of the potato. Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution 39(3): 121-123

The history of a cultivated crop can be studied by examining illustrations in early paintings. Potato tubers are depicted in a painting entitled "Putto alato che fa le bolle di sapone" (winged Cupid blowing soap bubbles) painted by Giulio Carpioni in 1650. Two potato tubers on the foreground are yellow skinned, while the third behind them is brownish.
