The oil boom of the 1970s and 1980s was both a blessing and a curse for Ecuador, as it was for many other oil exporters. Petroleum revenues raised the standard of living, provided increased employment opportunities, and greatly expanded the capacity of the state. Yet the increased range of choices and the changes in economic incentives that came with petroleum wealth led to structural shifts in the economy that particularly discriminated against agriculture.
