American dog tick: vector of the Potomac Horse Fever rickettsia, Ehrlichia risticii ?

, : American dog tick: vector of the Potomac Horse Fever rickettsia, Ehrlichia risticii ?. Parasitology Today 5(11): 355-356

Ehrlichia risticii, is an intraleukocytic rickettsia that causes serious disease with a 10-30% mortality in horses. Its means of transmission is in doubt and this letter suggests that the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, is unlikely to be a vector. Seroepizootiological studies have questioned whether a relationship between E. risticii and D. variabilis exists. The results of these studies suggest that exposure and seroconversion to E. risticii is independent of the American dog tick.
