An attempt to differentiate by microscopic methods two plant mycoplasma-like organisms

, : An attempt to differentiate by microscopic methods two plant mycoplasma-like organisms. Cytobios 72(289): 71-82

The biological and ultrastructural characterization of mycoplasma agents of two distinct diseases, apple proliferation (AP) and clover phyllody (CP), recently isolated on Catharanthus roseus L. using Cuscuta campestris Younk, was investigated. CP and AP agents were present in the phloem tissues of all infected plants, but they varied in morphology, frequency and pathogenic effects. CP agents were always pleomorphic, numerous and caused barely discernible alterations to cell organelles. AP agents were roundish and, although very few in number, caused distinct alterations to cell organelles. It is suggested that CP and AP agents should be placed in two distinct groups of mycoplasma-like organisms (MLOs), viz virescence and decline MLOs, respectively.
