Basal injury from smoldering fires in mature Pinus ponderosa Laws

, : Basal injury from smoldering fires in mature Pinus ponderosa Laws. International Journal of Wildland Fire 1(2): 107-118

Fuel accumulations were measured in duff mounds around the bases of 19 mature trees of Pinus ponderosa in a 200-yr-old stand that had not burned for 69 yr in Glacier National Park, Montana. Presettlement fire interval was 13-58 yr. Duff depth increased with tree diameter and decreased with distance from the stem; depth ranged from 3 to 39 cm at 30 cm from the stem.
