Basin-cum-furrow irrigation technique for post-rice upland crop on heavy clay soil ricelands of Mekong Delta, Vietnam

, : Basin-cum-furrow irrigation technique for post-rice upland crop on heavy clay soil ricelands of Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Proceedings of international conference on advances in planning, design and management of irrigation systems as related to sustainable land use, Leuven: 395-407

In Vietnam's Mekong Delta, farmers are reluctant to try growing other crops in their irrigation basins after the main rice crop has finished. This is because of the flat topography and the heavy clay soil characterized by low permeability and cracks (resulting in high water loss, as well as waterlogging after sudden heavy showers). Conventional furrow irrigation is not practised because of high costs for land shaping.
