Counteraction of the Tsjernobyl disaster: (1) soils and plants

, : Counteraction of the Tsjernobyl disaster: (1) soils and plants. Chemical climatology and geomedical problems Proceedings of the international symposium, Oslo, Norway, 21-22 May 1992: 155-167

In Norway the main radionuclide in the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear accident was radiocaesium. Crops were affected by direct contamination and by indirect contamination by root uptake from contaminated soils. Deep-ploughing reduced plant uptake as most of the radioactivity was in the upper soil layer. Additions of potassium fertilizer (150 kg/ha) in the spring to cultivated grasslands reduced the plant uptake. Liming (3 tons limestone/ha) had no effect on plant uptake.
