Development of mass-rearing methods for the sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) II: diet gelling agents

, : Development of mass-rearing methods for the sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) II: diet gelling agents. Proceedings of the Annual Congress South African Sugar Technologists' Association ( 67): 127-129

Experiments were conducted to investigate the use of viable, cheaper alternatives to agar and other possible methods of reducing agar usage in artificial diets for laboratory reared insects. Gelatin and apple pectin, as well as several different agar concn and/or preparation methods, were tested on Eldana saccharina. Gelatin proved unsuitable. Pectin was seen as a viable alternative, although some disadvantages are discussed.
