A nine-year-old 30 kg Labrador was presented conscious but unable to stand, with hyperventilation of about 60 breaths/min, abdominal discomfort and a rectal temperature of 40 degrees C. The dog's capillary refill time was delayed and the pulse volume poor. An 11-year-old 35 kg Retriever (the Labrador's kennelmate) was depressed with a rectal temperature of 39.2 degrees C and also displayed abdominal discomfort on palpation.
