Loosening of dense clay soils by linear blasting

, : Loosening of dense clay soils by linear blasting. Journal of agricultural engineering research 54(2): 113-126

A study was conducted of a method whereby sewage sludge and explosives were used to improve the physical properties of heavy clay soils. Previous reports have investigated blasting requirements, optimum soil moisture, quantity of explosives, and depth of charge in single point blasting tests. This paper considers simultaneous blasting of two point charges and two line charges. The results showed that with two-point blasting in heavy clay soil, the appropriate depth of the charges is 0.7 m and the distance between charges 1.4 m, enabling soil disturbance down to 1.5 m. With two-line blasting the appropriate depth is 0.7 m and the distance between charges 2.1 m; the depth blasted was 1.5 m.
