The non-faecal nitrogenous excretion rate in starved sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) fingerlings and fingerlings about 43 g body weight, fed at 2.2, 4.4, 8.4, 9.5 and 10.5% of body weight at 17.5 degrees C was investigated. In the non-faecal excrements of starved sterlets the ammonia:urea ratio was 1.4:1 and was much lower than in teleosts. In fed sterlets urea excretion rate was higher than in starved fish, but independent of plane of nutrition.
