Lack of deliberate and coordinated research activities in the region directed specifically towards seed problems, including seedborne diseases and their adverse effects on food production are pointed out. The concept of food security as outlined by the SADC's Sector of Food and Agriculture and Natural Resources is emphasized as part of a discussion of food crops recommended in the Food Security Basket that are propagated by orthodox seeds.
