Combining ability analysis for panicle characters in sorghum

, : Combining ability analysis for panicle characters in sorghum. Indian Journal of Agricultural Research 29(1-2): 98-102

Four male sterile lines and ten restorers were crossed in a line times tester fashion to estimate the type of gene effects controlling various panicle characters. Estimates of variance due to general and specific combining ability indicated the presence of non additive gene action for all the characters except 100 grain weight. The lines 111 A and 205 A among the female and 89054 R, 29 R and Co 21 among the male parents were good general combiners for yield. Among the crosses 205 A times 89054 R possessed the highest sca effects for yield and panicle breadth. In view of role of non-additive gene action for the important yield characters heterosis breeding may be adopted for the development of hybrids.
