Effects of snail-conditioned water on survival and host-searching behaviour of schistosome miracidia

, : Effects of snail-conditioned water on survival and host-searching behaviour of schistosome miracidia. Animal Behaviour 48(1): 1-8

The influence of water conditioned with the host-mollusc, Biomphalaria glabrata, on the survival and behaviour of trematode miracidia, Schistosoma mansoni, at different ages was investigated. In the presence of snail-conditioned water, the life span of the miracidia was shortened and swimming behaviour underwent age-dependent modifications of linear speed and sinuosity, compared with the control: at 0.5 h post-hatching, sinuosity was higher; between 0.5 and 4-5 h post-hatching, linear speed and sinuosity were lower; from 5 h post-hatching, linear speed was lower and sinuosity did not differ from that of the control. Three distinct phases to host-searching behaviour are proposed: an excitatory phase corresponding to a chemoklinokinesis for 0.5-h-old miracidia; a strategic phase corresponding to a chemo-orthokinesis then a chemoklinokinesis for 0.5-4-5-h-old miracidia and an ageing phase corresponding to an important decrease in linear speed for 5-8-h-old miracidia.
