The effects of elevated temperature (60 degree C for 15 min) and/or high photon flux density (approx. 3500 mu-mol m-2s-1 for 30 min on the bleaching of chlorophyll-protein complexes (CP1, CPa, LHCP1, LHCP2 and LHCP3) in thylakoids isolated front 24 h greened cucumber cotyledons were studied. CPa was found to be the most heat susceptible to damage. Elevated temperature caused also faster bleaching of chlorophyll b than chlorophyll a in LHCPs and LHCP1 complexes, whereas the reverse phenomenon was observed in LHCP2. On the other hand, chlorophyll b was more photoresistant than chlorophyll a. Strong light and elevated temperature caused 2-5 nm shift of the red absorption maxima of the LHCPs toward the shorter wavelengths. Heat- and photo-susceptibilities to bleaching of various pigment-protein complexes were discussed.
