This paper focuses on three prominent outdoor history museums in the USA: Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, Greenfield Village in Michigan and Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. It establishes: the reasons such museums were created, their ownership and management, their approach to interpretation and the extent of their combined contributions to the heritage tourism trade.
