Propagating and stationary patterns in reaction-transport systems: generic mechanisms, spatial geometries and response to external fields

, : Propagating and stationary patterns in reaction-transport systems: generic mechanisms, spatial geometries and response to external fields. Advances in porous media volume 2: 107-149

The variety of origins, structures and occurences of non-linear waves in reaction-transport systems is reviewed. Generic mechanisms of wave and pattern development are shown to be closely associated with underlying mathematical structure such as multiplicity in steady-state behaviour, chemical oscillations, small-amplitude instabilities, and inherent degeneracy such as occurs when several species behave similarly chemically.
