Sheep breeds, wool preparation, wool classing and management practices in the Falkland Islands during 1990/91

, : Sheep breeds, wool preparation, wool classing and management practices in the Falkland Islands during 1990/91. Wool Technology and Sheep Breeding 43(3): 202-211

A survey by questionnaire of sheep producers on the Falkland Islands showed that Corriedales accounted for 61% of the sheep population, the remainder being Polwarths (27%) and Romneys (12%). The questionnaire showed that 69% of producers were planning to change to finer wool breeds, particularly to the Polwarth (35% of farms). The wools baled from oddments removed during fleece preparation included wool from the belly, neck, pieces (shorter poorly coloured skirts), stained pieces and locks.
