, : State-centred commercial smallholder development: haves and have-nots in KaNgwane. Development Southern Africa 12(1): 113-126

Since the demise of the South African peasantry, there have been sporadic recommendations or attempts to create or regenerate an independent peasantry through state intervention. In the former homeland of KaNgwane the extension of sugar production, and to a lesser extent bananas and citrus, is taking a classic small farmer route involving the reallocation of arable land as economic units able to sustain full-time farming and yield a reasonable income.
